When do you need Tooth Extractions?

Tooth extractions become necessary for several reasons:

  1. Severe Decay or Damage: When a tooth is extensively decayed or damaged and cannot be restored through procedures like fillings or crowns, extraction may be the only viable option.

  2. Overcrowding: In some cases, orthodontic treatment may require the removal of a tooth to create space for proper alignment.

  3. Infection or Gum Disease: Untreated gum disease or an infection that has affected the tooth and surrounding bone may necessitate extraction to prevent further spread.

  4. Impacted Wisdom Teeth: When wisdom teeth (third molars) do not have enough space to emerge properly, they can become impacted, causing pain, infection, or damaging neighboring teeth.

  5. Risk of Infection: For individuals with a compromised immune system (such as due to chemotherapy or an organ transplant), a tooth at risk of infection might need extraction to prevent potential complications.

  6. Preparation for Orthodontic Treatment: Sometimes, extractions are necessary to create space for orthodontic treatment, especially in cases of severe crowding.

  7. Trauma: If a tooth is severely fractured or damaged due to an accident or trauma, extraction might be the best course of action if it cannot be saved.

What patients say about us!

From the start of check in, to during the visit, and towards the end it was all pleasant. I couldn't thank the staff and Dr enough for their compassionate care. They made me feel heard and at home. I'm so glad my friend recommended me here. Definitely going to be my new standing dental care team. If you are looking for a dentist office to make it your home... loook no further. I had XRays and work done the same day and there wasn't any 'consultation appt' then return to get work done. Aahhhhhhhhmazing!!! Trust me I have had plenty of work done in my last couple decades of life. By far the best customer service, top compassionate quality care.

Great dentist. I had an issue with my insurance and left due to a large bill. I generally would not return after a situation like this, but Cedar Creek made it up to me. I even moved to a different part of town and found a new dentist. After not getting adequate care, I called and ask to come back to Cedar Creek. Dr. Han is a fantastic dentist. He takes the time to get to know his patients and I truly trust him. I have gone to several dentists throughout the years and he is by far the best. I highly recommend Dr. Han and the Cedar Creek team!

finding Cedar Creek. The staff is amazing and so personable. They truly make you feel welcome. I was a new patient and the process for new x-rays, pictures and the cleaning couldn't have been done better. I have never had such a thorough check-up done. Lauren the dental hygienist was so friendly and so gentle on my teeth. I cannot express enough how impressed I am with this team. I have to give a special shout out to Letty, the front office receptionist. She was amazing to work with from the beginning in scheduling my appointment. She made everything so easy and was so friendly not only over the phone but when I walked through the door. Dr. Rust is a fabulous Dentist and I would highly recommend going here for the best customer service and if you care about your teeth. She took the time to listen to my concerns and what bothered me about my teeth. You are doing it right Cedar Creek Dental! Thank you for such an incredible experience.

Frequently Asked Questions - Portland Dental Extractions

Q1: What is a tooth extraction?

A1: A tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the bone. It’s typically performed when a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or causing issues within the mouth.

Q2: Is a tooth extraction painful?

A2: The procedure itself is performed under anesthesia, so you shouldn’t feel any pain during the extraction. Afterward, some discomfort is normal, but your dentist will provide guidelines for managing it effectively.

Q3: How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

A3: Recovery time varies but generally takes a few days to a week. The initial healing period is about 1-2 weeks, during which you should follow post-operative care instructions provided by your dentist.

Q4: Are there risks associated with tooth extractions?

A4: As with any dental procedure, there are potential risks, including infection, dry socket (a condition where the blood clot doesn’t form properly or is dislodged), damage to surrounding teeth or tissues, and, in rare cases, nerve injury.

Q5: Are there alternatives to tooth extractions?

A5: In some cases, alternatives like root canal therapy or other dental procedures can save a tooth. However, extraction might be necessary if the tooth cannot be saved or poses a risk to your oral health. Consulting with your dentist can help determine the best course of action for your specific situation.
