Intraoral Camera

Intraoral camera at dentist office in Beaverton ORAt Cedar Creek Dental, we are passionate about patient education. We believe that by educating you on great oral health and the intricacies of your own mouth you will be able to keep your natural teeth for your whole life. One of the ways that we like to help you learn about your own mouth is through a neat little tool called the intraoral camera.

What is an intraoral camera?

The intraoral camera is a very useful little device that allows us to show you the inside of your mouth in real time. It’s about the size and shape of a toothbrush and it has a cord connecter to the back. At the front end is a high definition camera with a little light to illuminate your mouth. The cord is connected to a nearby computer that we use to stream the video feed that we take of your mouth onto a monitor that’s in front of you.

The end result? You get to see the inside of your own mouth, in high definition, live on a computer monitor!

How and why do you use an intraoral camera?

Let’s say that you are at our office having a routine cleaning and examination done. We get your teeth nice and clean and in the process we notice something. Maybe it’s something kind of boring like some tartar buildup on the backside of your teeth. Maybe it’s something potentially serious like a small grown in the back of your mouth or throat. In either one of these cases it is pretty darn useful to allow you to see what’s going on inside your mouth.

In the case of the first scenario, where we notice some tartar buildup, instead of trying to explain where it is, what it looks like, and how you can take care of it, we can just put it up on the screen and you can see exactly what we see. In the case of the second scenario, where we notice a potentially serious, we can allow you to see first-hand what it is and make useful commentary on it.

Many times it can spook people to hear that they have a potential issue in their mouth. Their imagination picks up a small tidbit of information and tends to run wild. We find that quite often patients minds are put at ease when they can see exactly what something is and how unimpressive it usually looks.

What is the issue that you most often use the intraoral camera to show patients?

One of the things we use the intraoral camera the most for is to show people where they need to clean in their mouth. It’s easy to miss places that are hard to reach or out-of-the-way. It can be even more difficult to figure out exactly where that spot is from a description. Instead we just show it to you with the intraoral camera!
